Health and Vitality Program

What is the Health and vitality program?

It is an opportunity for us to guide you whilst you help your pet achieve an ideal weight. Ideal weight supports optimal health and gives your pet the best chance at living a long life.

Is your pet overweight?

Don’t take it lightly…

Being just 20% overweight can put your pet at a greater risk of developing a number of serious health conditions.

That is a dog that weighs 12kg instead of 10kg

Or

A cat that weighs 5kg when it should weigh 4kg. Not very much is it?

They can be at increased risk of developing:

  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Reduced activity
  • Increased surgical and anaesthesia risk
  • Heart disease
  • Urinary stones
  • Respiratory disease
  • Lowered immunity
  • Poor skin and coat
  • Shortened life expectancy

We know for a fact that if you’re visiting us you love your pet but have you heard the saying “killing them with kindness”? Unfortunately it does apply to obesity and we need to do something about it. At the end of the day, our pets do not source their own food, we are feeding them. It is our responsibility to feed them appropriately to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.

Where does your pet fit on the scale?

If your pet is fluffy, you need to feel. We can assist you with a weight check at any time and if there is a concern that your pet is overweight we can help. We want your pet to live a long, happy and healthy life.

To assist you, we have a brand new…

Health and vitality program – available now

Meet Nurse Hannah

Hannah first came to us when she was in year 10 at high school for work experience and it seems she enjoyed herself because she came back. Hannah has been a veterinary nurse at Eltham Veterinary Practice for 5 years now and thoroughly enjoys her role. She has previously owned a lovely Australian Terrier named Netti (pictured left) who almost reached her 17th birthday! And currently owns a playful, affectionate and very cheeky Burmese cat named Loki. Over her time here Hannah has developed an interest in pet nutritional, specifically weight loss.

“I love that I can help treat a medical condition, because after all that is what obesity is. Sometimes we have no control over our pets health, which can be very disheartening but when it comes to weight we do, we have control. Overweight pets are at risk of developing certain medical conditions; this can shorten your pet’s life and can certainly reduce their quality of life. Some of these conditions are life long, not to mention costly. Just like you, we want your pet to live their best life. Achieving a healthy weight will assist them to do just that” – Hannah.

“When we first met with Hannah, our abrador Tilly was morbidly obese. We had noticed her weight gain over the course of a long time but she was a very happy dog so we didn’t really think about the impact it could have on her, we just thought what was most important is that she is happy. However when Hannah presented us with all the information about dog obesity, the impact and how we could turn it around for Tilly especially as she grows older, we knew we had to do the right thing by our dog.

Hannah’s support was amazing throughout the whole journey- she was so kind and helpful an we could see she was genuinely happy seeing Tilly lose weight for her health.

Hannah made the process so easy by breaking it down for us to a new food routine that was easy to stick with and she was so receptive to any concerns or problems we had along the way and always had a solution to make sure we could do this. With Hannah’s unwavering encouragement and support each step of the way, our gorgeous Tilly has now hit her goal weight!

Now, she is more than just a happy dog. She is spritely and energetic and had returned back to her more active younger self. If feels like we have a new dog! We have Hannah to thank for helping us give our dog the best life possible and it feels so great to know that we have done the right thing by Tilly and ensured her a longer and much happier life by taking care of her weight.”
